GOOGLE ADVERTISING
Google Ads, formerly known as Google AdWords, is an advertising service by Google that allows businesses to display ads on Google search results and its advertising network.
Have you ever noticed when you do a Google or Google Maps search for a product or service some listings in the search results, at the top of the page, are marked “Ad”? These are ads that a company has paid for to ensure that they are shown at the very top of the Google SERP (Search Engine Results Page). The listings below the ads are called organic search results. These are listings that the Google search engine perceives as the best match to whatever terms were searched for by the user. Getting ranked near the top of those results is what Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is all about.
SEO takes some time and effort to get a business ranked near the top of Google Search Results, and is arguably a better long-term strategy for growth, but if you want faster results, Google Ads may be a good option.
Running Google Ads is similar to Facebook Advertising in that Google has loads of data on its users that they will sell you so that you can target your ads to specific viewers. You can filter who will see your ads by things like geographical location, keywords (terms that are being searched by users), and user info like their age, likes, past searches etc. They can even be targeted to specific devices; computers and laptops, tablets, or mobile devices (phones).
One of the best things about Google Ads is that they are Pay-Per-Click. Rather than paying for impressions (how many viewers are exposed to the ad), you pay for how many times the ad is actually clicked on by the viewer. This model can be quite cost effective and gives a very accurate return on investment, at least at the level of the viewers interest. Ad spend budget can also be controlled easily, just like running Facebook ads.
For example, if a fencing contractor in Orlando Florida wants to get more leads quickly, they can run Google Ads that will only show to viewers or searchers in the Orlando area, that search specific keywords like “fence” or “fence contractor” or “wood fencing.” Rather than paying for the number of times that the ad is displayed in search results, the company will only pay for the number of times that their ad is clicked on.
As you can see, the ability to target ads is extremely beneficial and cost effective for businesses. In the “old days” (pre-internet), local businesses would run an ad somewhere (newspapers, TV ads, radio ads, etc.) and pay a rate based on how many total viewers or readers that ad reached, even though only a small percentage of those readers may be looking for what they have. Internet marketing has revolutionized that process, making targeted advertising MUCH easier and with a higher return on investment. Google Ads is a prime example of that.
However, this has made it more time consuming for the advertiser. For example, instead of just calling up the local paper and running a print ad, the business now really needs to do some homework to know where to target the ads online.
